Chamber, United Way to Partner
Thursday, 02 June 2011 00:00

Chamber partners with United WayThe Ocilla-Irwin County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors welcomed Greg Millette as guest speaker for its May 12 meeting. Millette is the executive director of United Way of South Central Georgia.

“We are proud to be one of the newer members of the Ocilla-Irwin Chamber,” said Millette, “And I appreciate the opportunity to share our new vision and direction with the board of directors.”

Millette, who was hired by United Way six months ago, first acknowledged that United Way has failed to provide more than minimal support to Irwin County in recent years. In fact, he said, United Way has failed to provide much support to Ben Hill, Cook and Turner counties as well, focusing almost exclusively on Tift County.

He stated that United Way is eager to start a new chapter by building partnerships with local agencies, learning from these agencies how United Way can best support their ongoing efforts. United Way will also stand ready to help individuals and agencies develop new initiatives designed to fill any present gaps in services.

United Way has begun to build these bridges by joining the Ocilla-Irwin Chamber for the first time ever, by regularly attending meetings of Irwin County Family Connection, and by providing internal leadership opportunities to Irwin County residents.

“We are very excited to announce that local entrepreneur Jannis Paulk has recently joined our board of directors,” said Millette. “Her connections across the community will help us to quickly develop the network we are looking to build, and her forward-thinking entrepreneurial spirit will serve us well as we lean into a new and radically different future.”

“As a member of the board I have the unique opportunity to serve at both a local and regional level. It’s exciting to know that I am in a position help facilitate the development of tangible partnerships that could have a long term positive effect within our community,” said Paulk.

In addition to the new multi-county focus, the ‘new and radically different future’ that Millette mentioned involves a transition from the traditional United Way role as merely a pass-through funder – raising funds from employees and then distributing them to agencies – to a new Community Impact Model, a model focused on targeting financial and volunteer resources to projects and initiatives that show positive outcomes in the areas of educational success for children, income stability for families and improved health care access for all. By focusing on these basic building blocks of community life, United Way hopes to do its part to help Irwin County continue to grow and thrive.

As a transitional step towards implementing the two strategic goals of United Way – greater impact outside of Tift County and a shift to community impact – Millette announced the creation of a Special Allocations Fund, available to agencies across the service region who would seek one-time financial support for a program or activity that impacts one of the Community Impact priorities. Anyone wishing to apply for such support should contact Millette at (229) 382-2881 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Millette is also available to discuss other possible partnership opportunities and to answer any general questions about United Way of South Central Georgia.

United Way of South Central Georgia is a local and independent unit of United Way Worldwide, chartered to serve the residents of Ben Hill, Cook, Irwin, Tift and Turner counties. Ninety-nine percent of all funds raised remain in the service area, with 1 percent going to United Way Worldwide in order to access their training, marketing and other resources. United Way of South Central Georgia will be celebrating 50 years of service in 2014.
